Question: I have started collecting old photo postcard since Christmas . all the one's i havecollected so far are either proper printed photo's or CDV's. I haverecently got a some photo's from around the 1910-1920 era and nearly allof them are post cards. Are the postcard images like a follow on to the cartes de visite? cansomeone explain how the process worked, did you have to have so manyprinted at a time or could you have individual picture's? Any other info appreciated.
Answer: Don't know about CDV, but it was certainly possible to get your familyphotos printed on postcard backs - a lot of small jobbing postcardproducers did that all the time for limited runs of postcards oflocal/topical interest. Often the onlty difference is that apostcard, as against a snapshot, will have a title, logo, or copyrightattribution on the photo (usually scratched, scribed, or painted ontothe plate, althogh I have seen these typed onto the postcard printitself after developing). I believe there are resources for identifying and dating "postcardbacks" by letter codes and logos in the "stamp box" but I have lostthe links I once had to these. Please remove "nospam" from mailto addresswhen replying
